My Poetry Poster

Summary: Today in class, I recited my poem.

Prompt: How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

When I was a kid, the holidays felt exciting and special because I had no real responsibilities and mostly thought about presents, food, and having time off from school. Everything seemed simple and fun, and I didn’t think about the work that went into celebrating. As I’ve gotten older, the holidays feel different because I have more duties, like helping prepare, shopping for gifts, and managing school or other obligations. I now care less about what I receive and more about being with family and keeping traditions alive.  Summary: Today in class, I worked on my poem. Reflection: I learned more about my poem.

Prompt: As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

What I enjoyed most about this class was the vocabulary assignments. I say this because it gave me more of a vocabulary and was nice since it was more of a laid back assigment. The aspect I connected with the post was the poetry. I say this because it gave me a deeper understanding of how an author thinks, it made me think differently on a lot of writings. I think I need more improvement on discussion questions. This is because sometimes it is hard to comprehend the questions and truly write about what I mean. Summary: Today in class, I worked on my project. Reflection: Today in class, I understood more of my poem.

Prompt: Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

One holiday tradition that is important to my family is eating a big meal together on Thanksgiving. Every year, my family gathers at one house, and everyone brings a dish to share. We sit at the table, talk, laugh, and sometimes argue a little, but it always feels special because we are all together. This tradition still matters because it gives us time to slow down and focus on each other, rather than being busy with school, work, or our phones. Summary: Today in class, I worked on my project. Reflection: I learned more about my poem.

Prompt: Write about something you’ve outgrown but still miss.

Something I have outgrown but still miss is playing wiffle ball. Wiffle ball is baseball, but with a plastic bat and ball. I miss this because I used to play with all my neighborhood friends. It was a time of nostalgia, and one of my favorite hobbies. I wish it weren't outgrown because I would still play in an instant.  Summary: Today in class, I did a vocab quiz and read about civil liberties. Reflection: Today in class, I learned more about civil liberties in the U.S.

Prompt: Write about something that you can't stop thinking about.

I can't stop thinking about my fantasy football team. This is because I am tied for last place and need to win this week to avoid the punishment. I really don't want to do the punishment, so I'm doing all I can not to lose. If I lose ,I am not gonna be happy. Summary: Today in class, I chose my classes for next year. Reflection: Today in class, I learned what electives were best for me.

My cultural mask

This is my cultural mask. Reflection: Today in class, I learned all about my classmates' culture. I found it very interesting how diverse my class is.

Prompt: Write about the best gift you have received.

The best gift I have received is my headphones. This was the best gift because I use them every single day. Without headphones, I would struggle to get through the day.  I value them very much because I need music to study, focus, and enjoy. I got these headphones from my grandma. Summary: Today in class, I worked on vocab. Reflection: Today in class, I learned more vocabulary terms.

Prompt: After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

One moment from the film that stood out to me was the bathroom scene. I say this because that's when the girl realized she shouldn't be afraid. This connects to the poem because it demonstrates that you shouldn't let anyone stop you from doing what you like. The part of my identity that I want my mask to reveal is my dreams. I say this because I want to prove to people who don't believe in me. Summary: Today in class, I worked on the mask project. Reflection: Today in class, I learned more of analyzing poems.

Prompt: In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

I am most proud of the social aspect of my teen culture. I say this because I like all my friends and I am glad to meet new people. I am also proud of how nice my friends are. I like how if I am nice to them, they are nice to me. I also like how they are good people. I wanted to have some friends who aren't nice, but I chose the right crowd and being with good people. Summary: Today in class, I read a poem. Reflection: Today in class, I analyzed a new poem and improved my annotation skills.

Prompt: In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

A time I followed what looked cool was when I went to a party. I thought it would be fun because all the cool people went to it. I ended up just looking after my friends and didn't have a good time. I expected it to be like what I see in the movies, but I got let down. It made me uncomfortable being with people who were irresponsible. It changed my perspective of what people think is fun. Summary: Today in class, I read a new poem. Reflection: Today in class, I learned a new poem and analyzed it.

Prompt: Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Something meaningful I experienced over break was my family. My family is what I was most thankful for during this time. I got to see all my cousins and grandparents at my mountain house in Blue Ridge. I had an amazing time spending time with them. It made me realize that they would always be here for me. Summary: Today in class, I worked on the vocabulary assignment.  Reflection: Today in class, I learned new vocabulary terms.
